It’s so exciting when our little ones first get mobile. Your phone is probably packed with videos of your little guy cruising around the furniture or your little girl crawling after the family puppy. But with that excitement comes the need for child proofing—because not only are they moving but they’re moving fast! One minute they’re here and the next, your pots and pans are all over the kitchen floor. Though most of the time when they manage to escape your supervision, the results are harmless, sometimes kids can get hurt right at home by items we use every day.

Recently a major furniture retailer issued a recall of several dresser styles because they can tip over, pinning kids underneath. So in the wake of that news, take a moment to survey the large items in your home, including furniture, electronics and appliances to make sure they’re stable in the face of your little daredevil’s climbing and pulling antics. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), about 3 injuries occur per hour due to tipping accidents, many resulting in trips to the emergency room.

What can you do?

The CPSC suggests you:

  • Anchor furniture to the wall or the floor.
  • Place TVs on sturdy, low bases.
  • Or, anchor the furniture and the TV on top of it, and push the TV as far back on top of the furniture as possible.
  • Keep remote controls, toys, and other items that might be attractive to children off TV stands or furniture.
  • Keep TV and/or cable cords out of reach of children.
  • Make sure freestanding kitchen ranges and stoves are installed with anti-tip brackets.
  • Supervise children in rooms where these safety tips have not been followed.

A little extra childproofing can offer a huge amount of peace of mind—and a safe environment to your little explorers, acrobats and gymnasts.
